When Anu Malik shared how one simple decision about Sonu Nigam’s voice changed the impact of ‘Sandese Aate Hai’

Mumbai, Aug 23 (IANS) Music composer Anu Malik once shared an anecdote from the recording of the iconic song ‘Sandese Aate Hai’.

An old clip of the music composer from one of Kapil Sharma’s shows has resurfaced on the Internet. It showcases the composer talking about the playback singer Sonu Nigam, and how he took the song to a different level.

He said, “A lot of times it has happened that when a song is made, the singer’s face comes out. I don’t know how other composers work but this happened with me. Do you remember the song from ‘Sandese Aate Hai’”?

Responding to the same, Kapil said, “Yes, absolutely”.

The composer said, “The song was made, two singers were on the mic, Roop Kumar Rathod and Sonu Nigam. The song in Roop Kumar Rathod’s had came out very well. I kept listening to it. At that time, I told J. P. Dutta, ‘Sir, 1 minute’ I went inside the cabin. I said, ‘Let’s change this. We will let Sonu Nigam sing”.

“At that time, there was silence. Anu made a decision. Sonu was a young boy. And I took this decision. I said, ‘Trust me, trust my instincts as a composer, this boy will take this song from here to there’. Roop Kumar is a great singer. When Sonu sang this line, the entire staff in the theater started getting up and clapping. And I said, ‘a singer is born’”, he added.

‘Sandese Aate Hai’ from ‘Border’ is one of the most emotional patriotic songs in Indian cinema. The song expresses the pain and loneliness of soldiers who stay away from their families to protect the nation. The letters mentioned in the song symbolize the emotional connection between soldiers and their loved ones.

The film, directed by J. P. Dutta, is based on the Battle of Longewala during the 1971 India-Pakistan war.
