Shanthanu Bhagyaraj: A birthday without my dad feels different!

Chennai, Aug 24 (IANS) Stating that he missed his dear father, actor Shanthanu, who celebrates his 40th birthday on Monday, has said that this birthday, without his dad, felt different.

Shanthanu, who is yet to come to terms with the loss of his father — the eminent director, actor and screenplay writer K Bhagyaraj — has now put out an emotional post on his social media timelines expressing the desire to hear his dad’s voice and see his smile just one more time.

Shanthanu wrote, “A birthday without my dad feels different. I wish I could hear his voice, see his smile… call me Singa… one more time… Some birthdays are not about growing older, but about missing the ones who made you who you are today, who built you, who blessed you, who made every birthday special. Miss you daddy – Singa.”

It may be recalled that the actor had, on an earlier occasion, put out a post on X in which he had said that if only he could, he would have transferred 10 years of his life to his father’s life.

Taking to his X timeline, a heart-broken Shanthanu, who was unable to come to terms with the demise of his father whom he loved dearly, posted a clip of a speech he had delivered earlier and wrote, “Only if I could (weeping symbol). Appa (dad) (heart broken symbol).”

The video clip that Shanthanu posted was of him delivering a speech in the presence of his father and mother. In the clip, the actor was seen saying, “If I can, I wish to give 10 years of my life to my dad. That is because that will mean that for another additional ten years, you will make more movies, tell more stories to the people. As a fan and as a learner, I wish to learn from those films.”

Shanthanu’s heartbroken statement and his love for his dad won hearts online with several people trying to console the inconsolable actor.

For the unaware, one of India’s finest screenplay writers and eminent Tamil film director and actor K Bhagyaraj passed away in June this year after suffering a major cardiac arrest. He was 73.

The veteran director and actor, who is considered to one of the legends of the Tamil film industry, is survived by his wife Poornima Bhagayaraj, son Shanthnu Bhagyaraj and daughter Saranya Bhagyaraj.

What compounded the pain was the fact that director Bhagyaraj’s demise came just 17 days after the passing away of his mentor K Bharathirajaa, another icon and trendsetter of Tamil cinema.

Several eminent actors, directors, producers and film industry professionals cutting across the country had joined scores of fans in expressing their shock and grief over the sudden demise of the veteran director, considered to be a legend of Tamil cinema.
