Rajasthan govt signs clean energy pact with California, makes record thermal output

Jaipur, June 26 (IANS) Rajasthan has achieved two major milestones in its power sector, reinforcing its position as a leader in both conventional and clean energy, government officials said on Friday.

While the state’s thermal power plants have recorded their highest-ever operational efficiency, Rajasthan has also entered into a landmark clean energy partnership with the US state of California to accelerate the transition towards a modern, sustainable power ecosystem.

State Energy Minister Hiralal Nagar announced the twin achievements during a virtual programme held in Jaipur, saying that the state government’s priority is to ensure affordable, uninterrupted and reliable 24×7 electricity supply while preparing Rajasthan for the next generation of renewable energy technologies.

The Rajasthan Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited (RVUNL) has achieved a historic milestone by operating its thermal power stations at 94.6 per cent of their installed capacity, one of the highest utilisation levels recorded by a thermal power utility.

According to the State Energy Minister, all 23 operational generating units collectively produced 7,171 MW of electricity in a single day, marking the highest-ever generation by the state-owned utility.

“Earlier, technical issues and equipment limitations prevented us from operating at such high levels. Our objective now is not merely to create a one-day record but to sustain this performance throughout the year and set new benchmarks in annual power generation,” Minister Nagar said.

In another significant development, the Rajasthan Electricity Regulatory Commission (RERC) signed a virtual Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the California Energy Commission, opening a new chapter in international cooperation on renewable energy and grid management.

The partnership aims to facilitate the exchange of technology, policy expertise and regulatory best practices in areas such as renewable energy integration, battery storage and smart electricity networks.

“Although Rajasthan and California are separated by thousands of kilometres, both share a common vision of expanding clean energy and building a sustainable future. This collaboration will enable both regions to learn from each other’s experiences and technological innovations,” Minister Nagar added.

The agreement will focus on several emerging areas of the power sector, including Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), advanced battery storage technology, will help store excess solar power generated during the day and supply electricity during peak evening demand, improving the reliability of renewable energy.

The collaboration will support the development of smart grids, advanced metering infrastructure and digital power management systems to reduce transmission losses, improve efficiency and curb electricity theft. Both sides will cooperate in developing robust electricity infrastructure for electric vehicle charging stations through joint research, technical cooperation and knowledge sharing.

The state government believes the partnership will strengthen Rajasthan’s position as one of India’s leading renewable energy states while complementing its rapid expansion in solar and wind power generation.

With record-breaking thermal generation ensuring immediate energy security and international collaboration paving the way for next-generation clean technologies, Rajasthan is positioning itself to meet rising power demand while advancing its long-term green energy goals, officials said.
