NHAI to Install Emission Control Devices on 25 DG Sets at Dwarka Expressway

New Delhi: The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) will install Retrofit Emission Control Devices (RECDs) on 25 diesel generator (DG) sets operating along the Dwarka Expressway in a move to strengthen emission-control measures in the Delhi-NCR region.

The initiative covers the 8.7-km Package-IV stretch connecting Basai to the Kherki Dhaula/Delhi-Gurugram Expressway cloverleaf intersection.

The move follows directions from the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) on regulating diesel generator sets in the National Capital Region, particularly during winter, when air pollution levels often rise and restrictions under the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) may come into force.

The DG sets are used for expressway lighting and other associated operations. NHAI said the installation process will include fitting, testing and commissioning the devices, along with comprehensive maintenance support.

The initiative is intended to ensure that generator sets required for essential highway operations are equipped with appropriate emission-control systems in line with applicable regulatory requirements.

To facilitate verification and compliance monitoring, NHAI has also stipulated that GPS-tagged photographs of the RECD installations at each generator set and location will be maintained.

The project forms part of NHAI’s broader effort to incorporate environmental protection measures into the construction and operation of national highway infrastructure, particularly in pollution-prone areas such as Delhi-NCR.

The authority said the initiative aligns with efforts to strengthen compliance with air-quality standards while ensuring the continued operation of essential highway facilities.
