Bengaluru, July 24 (IANS) The National Commission for Women (NCW) has taken suo motu cognisance of the reported kidnapping, forced intoxication and sexual assault of a 14-year-old girl in Bengaluru, expressing serious concern over the safety and protection of minor girls.
In a statement, the Commission said the incident raises grave concerns over crimes against children and underscores the need for stringent action against sexual offenders.
NCW Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar has written to the Director General of Police, Karnataka, seeking immediate intervention to ensure a swift and impartial investigation into the case.
The Commission has asked the state police to expedite the filing of a comprehensive charge sheet under the relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
The Commission has also directed authorities to ensure meticulous collection of forensic, medical and digital evidence to strengthen the investigation.
Further, the NCW has called for adequate security measures, victim compensation, legal assistance and psychological counselling for the minor survivor and her family. It also urged the Karnataka Police to enhance vigilance in vulnerable areas to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Seeking accountability in the matter, the Commission has asked the Karnataka DGP to submit an Action Taken Report (ATR) within seven days.
“The National Commission for Women will closely monitor the matter to ensure justice is delivered,” the statement said.
The intervention by the NCW comes amid growing concerns over crimes against women and children, with the Commission reiterating its commitment to safeguarding the rights and dignity of survivors of sexual violence.
The case relates to the alleged abduction and rape of a 14-year-old girl by an autorickshaw driver at an under-construction building in Devanahalli on the outskirts of Bengaluru on the night of July 17. Police have arrested three people, including a woman, in connection with the incident.
