Kolkata, Aug 4 (IANS) A man has been arrested on charges of allegedly raping his girlfriend after inviting her to a birthday party and later extorting money from her, said the police on Tuesday.
According to the police, the accused raped her again after promising her marriage. He was also accused of extorting Rs 1.5 lakh from the woman.
The young man was arrested on Monday by the police based on the complaint lodged by the woman. The incident took place in Jadavpur area of south Kolkata. Police said that the name of the arrested young man is Anubhav Bhattacharya.
According to the police, the complainant met Anubhav Bhattacharya on social media. Gradually, their acquaintance became stronger. After that the two exchanged mobile numbers and started talking over the phone. The two also met on a number of occasions.
The young woman did not have any doubts about Anubhav because of his good behaviour. In this situation, one day, Anubhav invited her to his birthday party and the young woman reached the specified address in good faith.
However, when the young woman went to that house, she saw that there was no one else there and only Anubhav was present in that flat. Allegedly, the young man raped her there.
According to the complaint, he promised to marry the young woman later. The girl found some ‘trust’ in that promise. Allegedly, she was raped again with the promise of marriage. Not only that, the accused took Rs 150,000 from her in the name of doing business.
The woman also alleged that after receiving the money, the young man started avoiding her. Later, he also stopped communicating with her.
Finally, the young woman filed a written complaint against the young man at the Purba Jadavpur police station. The accused was arrested on Monday based on the investigation.
“The accused man has been arrested. Investigation is underway,” said a senior officer of Kolkata Police.
