BENGALURU: Leader of the Opposition in the Karnataka Assembly R Ashok has demanded a judicial inquiry into the killing of three people in a firing incident involving forest department personnel in Hanur taluk of Chamarajanagar district.
Ashok alleged discrepancies in the versions given by forest officials, local representatives and the minister over the deaths. He said the families of the deceased have disputed the forest department’s claim that the three were involved in wildlife hunting, raising allegations of a “fake encounter”.
Questioning whether the firing was necessary, Ashok said the statements of the personnel involved in the incident and those of local residents do not match. He called for a probe to establish the sequence of events and determine responsibility.
The Opposition leader also questioned the decision to order a magisterial inquiry, saying it could raise doubts over whether the families would get justice. He sought a judicial investigation and demanded that the personnel involved be kept away from duty until the probe is completed.
Meanwhile, BJP state president B Y Vijayendra said on X that the incident amounted to a violation of human rights and called for a transparent investigation. He also urged the government to provide adequate financial assistance and enhanced compensation to the bereaved families.
