
Bhopal, Oct 11 (IANS) The CBI arrested an official of the CGST and Central Excise department in Bhopal for taking a bribe of Rs 2 lakh from a company handling scrap and seized Rs 72.50 lakh cash from his premises in the city and Kanpur, an official said on Sunday.
Rajesh Kumar, superintendent, Preventive Branch (HQ) CGST and Central Excise Commissionerate, Bhopal, was caught red-handed while accepting the undue advantage on Saturday, the agency said.
The CBI registered the instant case on Saturday against the accused on allegations that the CGST superintendent demanded an undue advantage of Rs 2 lakh per month from a proprietor of a Bhopal-based firm.
The company’s official filed a complaint with the CBI that the official was demanding a bribe in consideration for not intercepting the firm’s vehicles carrying scrap material and for not causing any hindrance to the complainant’s scrap business, the agency said.
The CBI laid a trap and caught the accused CGST Superintendent red-handed while accepting an undue advantage of Rs 2 lakh.
Searches were conducted at the residential premises of the accused at Bhopal and Kanpur, which led to the recovery of Rs 72.50 lakh in cash and the documents pertaining to immovable property, said the CBI.
In an earlier case in Bhopal, the CBI arrested Chief Engineer (Electrical) and Superintending Engineer (Electrical) of BSNL for taking a bribe of Rs 75,000.
The CBI registered the case on allegations that the accused Chief Engineer (Electrical) and Superintending Engineer (Electrical) posted at BSNL, Bhopal, demanded an undue advantage of Rs 2 lakh each for themselves and a co-accused from a Jabalpur-based firm which executed Operation & Comprehensive Maintenance (OCM) and electrical installation-related work of BSNL.
The CBI said the bribe amount was demanded to process pending bills of the firm for 14 different works.
The CBI laid a trap and caught both accused BSNL officers in Bhopal red-handed while accepting an undue advantage of Rs 75,000 each as part payment of the demanded bribe of Rs 2 lakh from each accused.
Searches were conducted at the residential and office premises of the accused persons in Bhopal, Lucknow and Kanpur, the CBI said.
