Kolkata, July 21 (IANS) Trinamool Congress general secretary and Lok Sabha member Abhishek Banerjee on Tuesday served a legal notice to rebel party legislator Madan Mitra, accusing him of disseminating false, fabricated, malicious and defamatory statements against the Diamond Harbour MP through social media.
In the legal notice sent to Mitra, Shrobana Sengupta, counsel for Abhishek, stated that the rebel legislator had been asked to pay Rs 10 crore as compensation for loss “of his personal reputation, political standing, credibility and goodwill” of the Diamond Harbour MP.
“It is made clear that the said Rs 10 crore shall be put into a registered trust, which shall facilitate the defection proceedings against defected MPs and MLAs of AITC and shall also cater to the legal and rehabilitation requirements of the victims of political violence inflicted upon them by false criminal cases instituted at the instance of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), hands in gloves with a few unattached defected Members of Lok Sabha and of West Bengal Legislative Assembly,” the legal notice read.
Mitra was asked to pay the compensation amount within three days. In addition, he was directed to publish a public apology, in both written and video formats, apologising to Abhishek for the defamatory statements made during his live video on July 19, 2026.
The notice further stated: “My client reserves all rights and remedies available to him under law. Nothing contained herein shall be construed as a waiver of any such rights, all of which are expressly reserved. You are called upon to respond to this instant notice and act according to its mandate within three days (72 hours) from the date of receipt, issued to you via email to the addresses used by you to maintain your verified Facebook profile and during the GE to WBLA, 2026, as disclosed in your Form 26 affidavit submitted before the Election Commission of India, as well as by Speed Post of India Post.”
