Guwahati, Sep 3 (IANS) Assam has emerged as one of the top-performing states in the implementation of the new criminal laws, with the state recording a compliance score of 92.16 per cent against the national average of 74.86 per cent, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Thursday.
Taking to social media platform X, CM Sarma highlighted Assam’s performance since the rollout of the new criminal laws, known as the Nyay Sanhitas, on July 1, 2024.
The Chief Minister said Assam has consistently remained among the leading states in the country in implementing the new legal framework.
According to CM Sarma, the state has achieved 100 per cent compliance across several key parameters linked to the implementation of the new criminal justice system. These include the rollout of the Nyay Sanhitas and the adoption of Model Rules, he said.
Assam has also recorded full compliance in the Inter Operable Criminal Justice System (ICJS) Data Sharing Matrix, which facilitates the exchange of criminal justice-related information between various agencies and systems.
The state has further achieved 100 per cent compliance in the National Automated Fingerprint Identification System (NAFIS) and the Medico-Legal Examination and Post-Mortem Reporting System, CM Sarma said.
The Chief Minister said the progress reflects the state’s efforts to strengthen the criminal justice delivery system through greater use of technology, improved coordination among agencies and adherence to the provisions of the new laws.
He said the government remains committed to ensuring that victims receive due attention and that cases are pursued until their logical conclusion.
“Every victim is heard, every case is pursued to the end, and every citizen receives timely justice,” CM Sarma said while outlining the government’s commitment.
The three new criminal laws — Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam — replaced the Indian Penal Code, Code of Criminal Procedure and Indian Evidence Act respectively from July 1, 2024, marking a major overhaul of India’s criminal justice framework.
The Assam government’s latest performance assessment comes amid efforts across states to align policing, investigation, prosecution and judicial processes with the new legal provisions.
CM Sarma said Assam would continue to work towards strengthening the justice delivery mechanism and ensuring timely justice for citizens.
