Srinagar, July 21 (IANS) Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Tuesday said the 100-day-long Nasha Mukt Jammu Kashmir Abhiyaan has evolved into a people’s movement against drug abuse, reflecting growing public participation in the fight against narcotics.
He directed all departments to act on pending recommendations against drug peddlers within 7-10 days and called for removing identified offenders from the system.
According to official figures, 20,292 FIRs were registered during the campaign as part of an intensified legal crackdown on narcotics-related activities. Law-enforcement agencies dismantled 92 drug networks and identified 4,474 drug hotspots across the Union Territory.
Authorities mapped out and targeted specific areas heavily impacted by drug distribution and usage. Rs 188.9 crore in assets were attached. Properties belonging to drug traffickers were seized and attached under stringent provisions, including the PIT-NDPS Act.
Under regulatory actions against traffickers, 884 Driving Licences were formally recommended for suspension or cancellation to restrict the mobility of smugglers. A total of 687 Vehicle Registrations were recommended for cancellation or suspension due to ties to narcotic logistics.
At least 64 passports were impounded to block international flight or escape by those involved in the narco-ecosystem. Eight Arms Licences were suspended, and official security cover was withdrawn from eligible suspects.
Public Mobilisation & Institutional Support were generated through Panchayat Mahila Samitis, youth clubs, senior citizens, and ex-servicemen. Religious institutions actively took charge as local guardians to break the social stigma of addiction.
The L-G specifically lauded the courage of local women for leading from the front to identify abuse and save local youth.
Institutional Alignment against drug abuse was achieved at major educational centres like the University of Jammu, which executed campus-wide anti-drug drives, driving over 118,000 online e-pledges via the official Nasha Mukt JK portal.
The administration announced that a new Rehabilitation and Socio-Economic Reintegration Scheme for Drug Abuse Victims will soon be launched to sustain this momentum.
