Two drug peddlers arrested in J&K’s Awantipora, contraband recovered

Srinagar, April 16 (IANS) Two drug peddlers have been arrested from the Awantipora area in J&K’s Pulwama district, and contraband recovered from them, police said on Thursday

“Under the ongoing Nasha Mukt Jammu & Kashmir Abhiyaan, Awantipora Police apprehended two drug peddlers during naka checking at Arch Kanal,” a police statement said.

A party of police post Toll Plaza headed by IC PP Toll Plaza, Sub-Inspector, Ishfaq Ahmad, under the supervision of station house officer (SHO) Police Station Awantipora, Inspector Ajaz Ahmad, intercepted two persons identified as Junaid Tariq, son of Tariq Ahmad Khan, resident of Hariparigam and Mubashir Ahmad Wani, son of Khazar Mohammad Wani, resident of Panjpora, who were riding on a motorcycle bearing registration No. JK03M-3900.

During their search, a contraband substance (charas/chura) weighing approximately 1.258 kg was recovered from their possession.

Both the accused persons have been arrested and their motorcycle was also seized. Case FIR No. 88/2026 under relevant sections of the NDPS Act has been registered at PS Awantipora.

Further investigation has been set into motion. Awantipora police reiterates its commitment under the Nasha Mukt Jammu & Kashmir Abhiyan to eradicate the drug menace and urges the general public to cooperate in this noble cause, the statement said.

Police and the other security forces are carrying out aggressive anti-smuggling operations in J&K. Those on the scanner of the police and the security forces include drug smugglers, drug peddlers and those involved in the hawala money racket. It is believed that funds generated by these illegal operations are used to sustain terrorism in J&K.

The duties to prevent drug smuggling, infiltration, exfiltration and drone activity initiated from the Pakistan side are performed by the army on the line of control (LoC) and by the Border Security Force (BSF) on the International Border.
