Three Hyderabad cops injured in fleeing drug trafficker’s escape bid

Hyderabad, July 27 (IANS) Three police personnel were injured after a suspected drug trafficker allegedly rammed his car into them while attempting to flee during a narcotics operation conducted by the Hyderabad Narcotics Enforcement Wing (H-NEW), officials said on Monday.

The incident occurred at Tilak Road in the Abids area in the heart of the city on Sunday.

According to police, an H-NEW team, acting on credible information about drug trafficking, launched an operation at Tilak Road to apprehend the suspects.

The team, which was keeping surveillance in the area, spotted the suspected drug peddler arriving in a car near a footwear shop to make a supply. The man in the car handed over a packet to another person. Acting swiftly, the police personnel arrested the suspect who received the packet.

When the H-NEW team intercepted the car, the man driving the vehicle pretended to park the car aside and get down, but suddenly accelerated the vehicle and rammed it into the police personnel in a bid to escape.

Police Constable Mahender Yadav suffered a leg fracture. Police chased the fleeing drug peddler and took him into custody near Afzal Gunj. In the process, Inspector Sreekanth and another constable, Vamseedhar, sustained minor injuries.

The alleged drug peddler has been identified as Saif, a resident of Husseini Alam area in the city.

Mahender had been admitted to a private hospital. On his complaint, cases of attempt to murder were registered against the accused at Abids and Afzal Gunj police stations.

Police said further investigation is underway.

Meanwhile, a pedestrian was killed after a car hit him in the Rajendranagar area in Hyderabad on Sunday night.

The man, driving the vehicle at a high speed and allegedly under the influence of alcohol, hit the man when he was crossing the road near Rajendranagar DCP office. The pedestrian died on the spot.

Locals chased the car and caught the driver when he was allegedly trying to flee. A young woman was also seated in the car.

They handed over the driver to police. The accused was identified as Sai Nithin. Police said he was heavily intoxicated.

Police registered a case and took up further investigation.
