New Delhi: In a major boost to Karnataka, the Supreme Court on Thursday dismissed Tamil Nadu’s petition challenging the state’s proposed Mekedatu project across the Cauvery river. The verdict marks a significant legal win for Karnataka, which has been pushing for the project for several years.
Karnataka’s Advocate General K Shashi Kiran Shetty described the judgment as an “unprecedented victory” for the state. “This outcome reflects the firm stand taken by the Karnataka government and the relentless efforts of our legal team,” he said after the ruling.
Tamil Nadu had been opposing the project for nearly seven years, alleging that it would affect its share of Cauvery water. However, with the Supreme Court rejecting the plea, Karnataka can now move forward with the project’s preparatory work.
Calling Mekedatu an “eco-friendly and welfare-oriented initiative,” Shetty clarified that the project will primarily ensure drinking water supply and will not harm the interests of Tamil Nadu. “As per the Cauvery Water Management Authority’s directions, only the detailed project report is being prepared. Tamil Nadu’s concerns have been duly respected,” he added.
The Supreme Court’s decision has been hailed as a vindication of Karnataka’s stand. K Shashi Kiran Shetty lauded the collective effort of the government and the team of lawyers who, he said, “strengthened the state’s position in this long legal battle.”
