Guwahati: Five people were killed and one injured in a shooting at Hotel Bilas Inn in the Bora Service area of Guwahati around 9 pm, Commissioner of Police Dr Partha Sarathi Mahanta said.
The accused, Ghanakanta Gogoi, who had taken the hotel on lease, was arrested within an hour. Police seized the weapon used in the incident.
According to Mahanta, preliminary investigations suggest that a property dispute linked to the hotel’s lease agreement may have triggered the shooting. Investigators suspect a dispute between the hotel owner’s side and the lessee.
Four of the deceased belonged to the same family, while the fifth victim and the injured person were from the same village, the commissioner said.
The injured person is undergoing treatment. The accused is being interrogated as police conduct a scientific and thorough investigation to establish the exact motive and sequence of events. Mahanta said the probe was at a preliminary stage and further updates would be provided as more information becomes available.
