Bengaluru, July 26 (IANS) Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar on Sunday said the sacrifices made by Indian soldiers are the foundation of the nation’s courage, freedom, and pride, while reiterating the state government’s commitment to safeguarding the welfare of ex-servicemen and their families.
Addressing the Kargil Vijay Diwas commemorative event at the National Military Memorial near Jawaharlal Nehru Planetarium in Bengaluru, Shivakumar paid tribute to the brave soldiers who laid down their lives during the 1999 Kargil War.
“Our soldiers’ sacrifices are our courage, our freedom, and our pride. Twenty-seven years ago, our brave warriors defeated the enemy in the Himalayas and hoisted the Tricolour. Our heroes may have attained martyrdom, but their legacy is eternal. I offer my heartfelt tributes to all the brave soldiers who sacrificed their lives for the nation,” he said.
Recalling the Kargil conflict, the Chief Minister noted that 527 soldiers were martyred in the war, including 13 from Karnataka. He said Indian armed forces have consistently defended the country’s borders under all circumstances.
“Whether it was the India-Pakistan wars, the India-China conflicts, or instances of border incursions, our soldiers have always stood ready, every moment of every day, to protect the nation with courage and determination,” he said.
Highlighting Karnataka’s contribution to India’s defence ecosystem, Shivakumar said the state remains the backbone of the country’s defence sector, with premier institutions such as BEML, DRDO, and ISRO operating from Karnataka.
“Because of our soldiers, we sleep peacefully in our homes. Karnataka is the backbone of India’s defence establishment. We can never forget the contributions of Field Marshal K.M. Cariappa, India’s first Commander-in-Chief,” he added.
Drawing a parallel between different sections of society and the strength of the nation, Shivakumar said soldiers, youth, women, farmers, and taxpayers are like the five fingers of a hand, which together form a powerful fist.
“Kargil Vijay Diwas is a very special day. The youth of this country have demonstrated that they are willing to do whatever it takes to protect India’s freedom. We will not allow internal or external forces to harm Bharat Mata,” he said.
The Chief Minister also assured support for the families of serving and retired defence personnel residing in Karnataka.
“Lakhs of soldiers’ families live in our state. Our government is committed to protecting your welfare. We are open to receiving your suggestions and will always be ready to work for your well-being,” Shivakumar said.
The Kargil Vijay Diwas programme was attended by military veterans, serving personnel, government officials, and members of the public, who gathered to honour the valour and sacrifice of India’s armed forces.
Union Minister for Heavy Industries and Steel H.D. Kumaraswamy stated, “I pay my heartfelt tributes to the immortal heroes of Kargil who laid down their lives in defence of our motherland on the occasion of Kargil Vijay Diwas.”
“The unparalleled bravery, courage, and patriotism of these great soldiers remain etched in our hearts forever. Their sacrifice continues to inspire every Indian. The nation will never forget the supreme sacrifice made by our proud soldiers. Jai Hind!,” Kumaraswamy said.
