Guwahati, Sep 5 (IANS) At least 300 people have been arrested across Assam as police launched a coordinated statewide crackdown against suspected fraudsters, touts and conmen allegedly involved in cheating people through fraudulent calls, messages and financial scams, officials said.
The operation was carried out across 29 districts following directions from Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, amid growing concerns over the increasing number of fraud-related complaints and cases being registered at police stations across the state.
Police teams conducted simultaneous raids at multiple locations and picked up several suspects for questioning.
Officials said the operation was still underway and more arrests could follow after verification of the suspects and their alleged involvement in fraudulent activities.
Lakhimpur district recorded the highest number of detentions with 15 people taken into custody, followed by Nagarbera with 13.
Bongaigaon and Goroimari reported 10 arrests each. Seven people were held each in Morigaon and Dhubri districts, while five were held in Goalpara.
Four people each were detained in Bajali, Tamharhat and Sonatoli, while Chhaygaon reported one detention. Sivasagar and Golaghat recorded two detentions each. In Guwahati, Garchuk Police detained five people allegedly involved in fraudulent activities in the Garchuk area.
According to police sources, several cases are already pending against some of the detained individuals in connection with alleged cheating and other fraudulent activities. Investigators are now examining the modus operandi used by the suspects, including the use of phone calls, messages and other means to allegedly dupe victims.
Police are also probing whether the individuals detained at different locations have any links with organised networks involved in financial fraud.
Officials said the statewide operation would continue as police teams carry out further raids and scrutinise information gathered during the crackdown.
The action is part of efforts to identify and dismantle networks allegedly targeting people through different forms of fraud and cheating. Police are expected to release further details as the verification and investigation process progresses.
