Mumbai, Aug 22 (IANS) Mumbai Police have arrested a 59-year-old man who had been absconding for nearly four decades in connection with a murder case, officials said.
The accused, identified as Suresh Chander Adagale, was arrested by the Sakinaka Police in Ranjangaon, Shirur tehsil, Pune district, on August 20 after a sustained search and investigation.
According to police, Adagale was initially arrested in the murder case when he was just 19 years old. The court later granted him bail and directed him to remain present for further proceedings.
However, the accused failed to appear before the court. Following his repeated absence, the court issued a non-bailable warrant against him. He subsequently went missing and remained untraceable for almost 40 years.
The Sakinaka Police continued efforts to locate him over the years. The police team responsible for tracing absconding accused recently took up the case.
On August 20, officers and personnel from the Sakinaka Police Station’s absconding accused search team used technical surveillance and information gathered through confidential sources to establish the accused’s whereabouts.
The investigation revealed that Adagale had been living in the Ranjangaon area of Shirur tehsil in Pune district while allegedly concealing his identity to avoid detection.
Acting on the information, a Sakinaka Police team reached the location and laid a trap at his new address. Police subsequently apprehended the accused, nearly four decades after he failed to return to court following his release on bail.
Police have taken Adagale into custody and are proceeding with further legal action in accordance with the court’s orders.
According to officials, the arrest is part of Mumbai Police’s efforts to trace long-pending absconders, including accused persons who have remained outside the reach of law enforcement for several decades.
