More rain with gusty winds in South Bengal, says weather office

Kolkata, Aug 23 (IANS) A fresh low-pressure area has formed over the Bay of Bengal, which will bring more rain in south West Bengal districts from Monday onwards. The Regional Meteorological Centre in Kolkata said on Sunday that scattered rain will continue in Kolkata due to its influence.

According to the Meteorological Office, the monsoon trough is active, and as a result, there will be no relief from the rain for now.

An official at the Met Office said, “There is a cyclonic circulation over the north Bay of Bengal adjacent to the West Bengal and Bangladesh coasts. It extends up to a height of 5.8 km above sea level. Due to its influence, a low-pressure area formed in the Bay of Bengal on Sunday morning. In addition, the monsoon trough is active. It extends from Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand to Digha and reaches the Bay of Bengal. Due to its influence, heavy rain may occur in some areas of south Bengal on Monday.”

Scattered rain with thunderstorms is likely in Kolkata till Monday, with gusty winds blowing at 30 to 40 kilometres per hour. The same forecast has been issued for Howrah, Hooghly, North 24 Parganas, East Burdwan, West Burdwan, Birbhum, Murshidabad and Nadia districts. However, heavy rain may occur in some districts, including South 24 Parganas, East Midnapore, West Midnapore and Jhargram. There is a possibility of heavy rain in Purulia, Bankura and Jhargram districts on Monday. Scattered rain will continue in these districts till Tuesday. However, there is no such warning of storms in the remaining districts of South West Bengal, including Kolkata, from Tuesday onwards.

Meanwhile, gusty winds are blowing in the north Bay of Bengal along the coasts of Odisha and West Bengal at 35 to 45 kilometres per hour. Fishermen have been asked not to go to the sea in this area till Monday.

On the other hand, thunderstorms will continue in North Bengal. There is a heavy rain warning in Jalpaiguri and Alipurduar districts from Monday to Wednesday. Heavy rain is likely in Kalimpong district on Monday and Tuesday. This warning has been issued in Cooch Behar district only on Monday. Darjeeling district is likely to receive more rain on Tuesday. The remaining three districts of the north, namely North Dinajpur, South Dinajpur and Malda, will experience scattered rain till Tuesday. However, there is no possibility of heavy rain.

On Sunday morning, the minimum temperature in Kolkata was 27.6 degrees Celsius, 1.2 degrees above normal. On Saturday, the maximum temperature in the city was 34.2 degrees Celsius, 2.2 degrees above normal.
