Chennai, Sep 1 (IANS) Moderate rainfall is likely across Chennai and several other parts of Tamil Nadu over the next two days due to a weather system prevailing close to the state’s coastline, the Regional Meteorological Centre said.
In its latest weather bulletin, the department said a low-pressure circulation persists in the lower atmospheric layers over the coastal areas of Tamil Nadu. The system is expected to bring scattered showers to northern, central and interior districts.
Chennai, Tiruvallur, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, Ranipet, Tiruvannamalai, Villupuram, Kallakurichi, Cuddalore, Tiruchy, Ariyalur, Perambalur, Salem and Namakkal districts are likely to receive light to moderate rain on Tuesday and Wednesday.
The forecast offers some respite from the prevailing heat, particularly in Chennai and its neighbouring districts. However, rainfall is expected to remain largely moderate and may not result in a significant reduction in daytime temperatures across the state.
The weather department has also forecast moderate rain in Chennai, Tiruvallur, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, Ranipet, Tiruvannamalai, Villupuram, Madurai, Sivaganga and Pudukkottai districts on Wednesday and Thursday.
Rainfall activity may vary from one locality to another, with some areas likely to remain dry despite generally cloudy conditions. Residents in Chennai and surrounding districts can expect intermittent cloudy skies and short spells of rain.
Morning and evening hours could witness relatively pleasant weather, while warm and humid conditions are likely to continue during the daytime.
Despite the forecast of showers, the maximum temperature across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal is expected to remain above normal during the next four days. The weather department said daytime temperatures could rise by up to three degrees Celsius above the seasonal average in isolated areas.
The combination of increased temperatures and atmospheric moisture is also expected to produce uncomfortable weather conditions. High humidity could make the temperature feel warmer than the actual reading, especially in coastal districts.
No warning for exceptionally heavy rainfall has been issued so far. Nevertheless, residents have been advised to remain alert to sudden showers, while motorists should exercise caution on wet roads. Farmers have also been asked to closely follow district-level forecasts before carrying out harvesting, irrigation or other agricultural activities during the coming days.
