Kolkata, July 24 (IANS) The Union government has approved the proposal from the West Bengal government for extension of the tenure of the state’s Chief Secretary Manoj Kumar Agarwal for six months.
A notification on this count had been issued by the State Personnel and Administrative Reforms Department on Thursday evening, notifying Agarwal’s extension as the State Chief Secretary for six months.
According to the notification, Agarwal will continue as Chief Secretary for a total of six months from August 1, 2026 to January 31, 2027.
On July 23, a letter was sent to the State Secretariat Nabanna from the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) under the Union Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions approving the state government’s proposal for extension of Agarwal’s term as the West Bengal Chief Secretary.

Agarwal, a 1990-batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer from the West Bengal cadre, was scheduled to retire from his administrative service on July 31, 2026.
However, the state government had sought his extension for six months, which was ultimately cleared by the Union government on Thursday.
As per the letter from DoPT to West Bengal permitting Agarwal’s extension, the extension has been made in accordance with Section 16(1) of the All-India Services (DCRB) Rules, 1958.
Incidentally, Agarwal handled the important responsibility as the Chief Electoral Officer of West Bengal before the recently concluded state Assembly polls.
Prior to that, he had served as departmental secretaries of crucial state government departments, including the State Personnel and Administrative Reforms Department.
After the overall peaceful voting in West Bengal this year, the Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar praised Agarwal’s role in the matter.
After the new Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government came to power under the leadership of Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari taking charge in May this year, Agarwal assumed the role of the Chief Secretary of West Bengal.
