‘Karnataka’s progress needs Centre’s continued support’: D.K. Shivakumar

Mysuru: Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar on Saturday appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to extend greater support for Karnataka’s development, stating that the state, particularly Bengaluru, has emerged as a global centre for technology, innovation and investment. He said sustained cooperation from the Central Government is essential to accelerate Karnataka’s growth and ensure its all-round development.

Speaking at the inauguration of the Swami Vivekananda Cultural Youth Centre–Vivek Smarak at the Sri Ramakrishna Ashrama in Mysuru, Shivakumar said the teachings of Swami Vivekananda continue to inspire generations of young Indians. He noted that the state government is implementing several initiatives under the theme “Youth Era–New Era” to encourage greater youth participation in nation-building. According to him, the energy, ideas and aspirations of young people will shape the future of a strong and developed India.

Recalling Mysuru’s historical association with Swami Vivekananda, Shivakumar said the then Maharaja Chamaraja Wadiyar had warmly welcomed the monk during his visit to Mysuru in 1892 and later supported his participation in the 1893 Parliament of the World’s Religions in Chicago. He said the contribution of the erstwhile Mysore State played a significant role in introducing India’s spiritual and cultural heritage to the world.

The Deputy Chief Minister also highlighted that the establishment of the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bengaluru was inspired by Swami Vivekananda’s vision and materialised through the efforts of industrialist Jamsetji Tata with the support of Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar.

Praising the work of the Sri Ramakrishna Ashrama, Shivakumar said the institution has been nurturing patriotism, discipline, moral values and a spirit of service among the youth. He assured that the Karnataka government would continue to support the Ashrama’s educational and social initiatives.

He further said the government is committed to strengthening youth organisations in both rural and urban areas while promoting sports, theatre and cultural activities under the “Team Karnataka” initiative.

Concluding his address, Shivakumar quoted Swami Vivekananda’s message, “Be bold-hearted when you fail and large-hearted when you succeed,” urging young people to face challenges with courage, remain humble in success and dedicate themselves to the service of society and the nation.
