Bengaluru: Fresh monsoon rains wreaked havoc across Karnataka on Sunday, claiming the lives of three members of a family and disrupting road and rail connectivity in several districts.
In Shivamogga district, Mallikarjuna (35), Nagaveni (28) and their three-year-old son Santhosh were killed after a hill collapsed on their house at Indiranagar in Thirthahalli. Two others were injured and admitted to hospital. In Hosanagar taluk, a huge tree fell on a moving goods vehicle, but the driver escaped unhurt.
In Dakshina Kannada, heavy rainfall forced the release of water from the AMR reservoir, inundating low-lying areas in Bantwal taluk, including Aladka, Bogodi, Nandavara, Gudinabali and Kanchikarpet. The Netravati River is flowing at a high level, prompting authorities to alert residents in vulnerable areas. An NDRF team has been deployed in Belthangady.
In Kodagu, Bhagamandala remained flooded, with Triveni Sangama, Snanaghatta and nearby parks submerged. Traffic on the Bhagamandala-Talacauvery road has been disrupted. Authorities have also warned people living along the Kabini River after 25,000 cusecs of water was released from the Kabini reservoir.
Meanwhile, landslides between Yedakumari and Srivagilu railway stations disrupted several train services on the coastal-Bengaluru route. Trains connecting Mangaluru, Karwar, Kozhikode, Murudeshwar and Vijayapura were cancelled or partially cancelled. Railway officials said restoration work is underway.
