Srinagar, Aug 28 (IANS) A man in Jammu and Kashmir’s Anantnag district was cheated of Rs 8.50 lakh under various pretexts, including a government job, police said on Friday, adding that the accused has been booked.
Police said a case was registered following a written complaint alleging cheating and fraud on the pretext of securing a government job and facilitating permission for installation of tents at Pahalgam during Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra.
Police Post Khanabal received a complaint from Waheed Ahmad Itoo, son of Gh. Nabi Itoo, resident of Hassan Noor, Aishmuqam, presently residing at GDC Boys Hostel, Khanabal, alleging that he was cheated by Aabid Hussain Nengroo, Anantnag, son of Gh. Hassan Nengroo, resident of Krandigam, Bijbehara.
As per the complaint, the accused allegedly induced the complainant by claiming that he could arrange a government job for him as an SPO in the Police Department and also facilitate permission for installation of tents at Pahalgam for the Amarnath Yatra pilgrims with the help of his political clout.
The complainant further alleged that, on the basis of these assurances and representations, he was induced to part with a total amount of Rs 8,25,000.
Taking cognisance of the complaint, FIR No. 283/2026 under Sections 318(4) and 351(3) BNS has been registered at Police Station Anantnag, and investigation has been set into motion.
Anantnag Police reiterated that strict legal action will be taken against persons found involved in cheating, fraud or exploiting individuals through false promises of government employment or other official benefits. The public has been advised to remain vigilant and not fall prey to such fraudulent assurances.
Police have proactively been chasing cases of fraud involving money, land, jobs, etc., in which gullible people were cheated by fraudsters by dropping big names and quoting political parties, to which the fraudsters are mostly not even remotely connected.
