Ghaziabad, Sep 12 (IANS) Panic gripped the Aditya Mega City high-rise residential complex in Indirapuram on Saturday afternoon after a major fire broke out in the storeroom of a flat. As a result, the tower was filled with thick, toxic, and suffocating smoke.
The fire was brought under control after firefighters launched a challenging operation. No casualties were reported in the incident, though goods stored in the storeroom and household items in the surrounding area were damaged.
According to the Fire Department, Vaishali Fire Station received information about the fire at around 2:12 p.m. Following the alert, the station in-charge, under the direction of the Chief Fire Officer, Ghaziabad, immediately dispatched two fire tenders along with a team of firefighters to the spot.
On reaching the complex, firefighters found that the blaze had broken out in the storeroom of flat number GC-502, located on the fifth floor of the tower. The fire had intensified rapidly, and smoke had spread to adjoining portions of the flat and the tower.
Maintenance staff of the housing society initially attempted to control the fire, but the intensity of the blaze made the situation difficult to manage. Thick smoke soon filled the tower, making it challenging for firefighters to enter the building.
Despite the difficult conditions, the fire personnel began the rescue and firefighting operation using protective equipment. A hose line was taken from the ground floor to the affected area through the staircase, while the building’s existing firefighting system was also used to tackle the flames.
Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus sets entered the affected flat and reached the source of the fire through the dense smoke. Modern exhaust equipment was deployed to remove the accumulated smoke from the tower and the flat.
After sustained efforts, the firefighters managed to completely extinguish the blaze. The prompt response by the Fire Department, along with the automatic firefighting system already installed in the society, helped prevent the fire from spreading to other flats.
The incident could have resulted in a major tragedy in the high-rise complex, had the fire and dense smoke not been brought under control in time.
The fire damaged items kept in the storeroom as well as household belongings in the surrounding area. The exact cause of the fire is being investigated. After extinguishing the blaze, firefighters inspected the affected area to ensure that there was no possibility of the fire reigniting.
