Kolkata, Oct 26 (IANS) The Calcutta Medical College and Hospital has formed a four-member investigation committee to probe the allegations of child death due to medical negligence.
The committee has been asked to submit the investigation report within 24 hours. The committee is headed by Professor Rakesh Mondal of the Department of Paediatric Surgery.
The committee also includes Sujoy Mitra, Head of the Department of Paediatric Surgery, Cardiologist Imran Ali and Medicine Doctor Sanjay Mondal.
A section of doctors claimed that the 11-year-old minor went into shock after being given an injection for a gastric problem. After that, he died of heart failure. The body of the deceased minor was sent for autopsy on Monday.
On Sunday, 11-year-old Pawan Yadav, a resident of Andul in Howrah district, was brought to Calcutta Medical College and Hospital. He was admitted to the Mother and Child Hub at 10 am with stomach pain.
However, the family claimed that he died within an hour and a half of being taken to the hospital. They alleged that the patient died due to wrong treatment.
Later, Health Minister Sharadwat Mukherjee visited the hospital. He also assured the family of a proper investigation into the child’s death.
The Calcutta Medical College and Hospital campus became heated on Sunday afternoon over the incident. The relatives of the deceased minor became violent. Amidst the tension, several of the aggrieved relatives attacked the police and hospital security personnel.
A scuffle between them broke out. They tried to attack the police personnel with helmets. The police also chased them back. The police personnel also raised their helmets and rushed at them. In the end, the police arrested several of the protesters and put them in a prison van.
The family alleged that the boy died due to medical negligence. They claimed that no senior doctors were present at the hospital and that the treatment was handled entirely by junior doctors.
Furthermore, the family asserted that these junior doctors are being untruthful. One of the grieving relatives stated, “We saw three injections being administered, yet they claimed that only two were given.”
However, a section of doctors are reluctant to accept the allegations of negligence. A junior doctor said that the minor was first given an injection called Dortin to reduce the stomach pain. The doctors then planned to give him medicine for a gastric problem. They asked the patient’s relatives to bring Pantoprazole. Due to the delay in bringing Pantoprazole, the minor was given an alternative medicine. After that, the patient went into shock.
From there, the minor died of cardiac arrest. A section of doctors claimed that the use of this medicine in cases of stomach pain is a very normal occurrence. There was a plan to get an X-ray done when the pain subsides. However, Pawan died before that.
