Bengal: Trinamool leader gets interim bail in flat encroachment case

Kolkata, July 1 (IANS) The Calcutta High Court on Wednesday granted interim bail to the Trinamool Congress leader Jay Prakash Majumdar in a flat encroachment case.

He will be released from judicial custody after about a month.

Police arrested Jay Prakash on June 3, who is accused of illegally occupying a flat for 14 years. Jay Prakash had approached the Calcutta High Court seeking bail. The case was to be heard in the bench of Justice Tirthankar Ghosh. But on June 29, Justice Ghosh withdrew from the case, citing personal reasons.

After that, the case went to the bench of Justice Ajoy Kumar Mukherjee for hearing. Justice Mukherjee granted Jay Prakash’s bail application on Wednesday. However, he will have to comply with certain conditions.

The Trinamool leader will not be able to enter the Phoolbagan police station area where the charges are filed against him. He will have to appear at the police station at a specific time. The court has ordered him to provide all possible cooperation in the police investigation.

There has been anger in the area for a long time against Jay Prakash over the occupation of the flat. It is alleged that he used to exert political influence when the Trinamool Congress was in power. That is why many people have claimed that they did not have the courage to speak against him.

On June 3, a few people were protesting against him by standing in front of his house. It is alleged that Jay Prakash raised his hand against some of them. The police reached the spot to control the situation and arrested the Trinamool leader.

He was taken to Bidhannagar North police station. Later, a case was registered against him under the relevant sections on charges of forcibly occupying the flat, insulting the elderly landlady and threatening her.

The agitators also threw eggs at Jay Prakash on the way to the police station. Allegedly, he rented a flat in the Phoolbagan area in 2012. Even after the contract expired in 2015, he did not vacate the flat. He did not even sign a new contract.

The owner of the flat and her daughter claimed that they went to the police station repeatedly during the Trinamool era, but no action was taken against him.
