Guwahati, April 18 (IANS) The Indian Army’s Red Horns Division under the Gajraj Corps on Saturday conducted a joint flood relief exercise, ‘Exercise Jal Rahat’, at the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati to strengthen inter-agency coordination and disaster response capabilities in flood-prone regions, officials said.
The large-scale exercise brought together multiple agencies, including the Army, the National Disaster Response Force, the State Disaster Response Force, and the Sashastra Seema Bal, highlighting a unified approach to tackling natural disasters.
Designed to simulate real-life flood scenarios, the exercise demonstrated a range of rescue and relief operations, including deep-water rescue, the evacuation of stranded civilians, and the deployment of advanced technologies, such as drones for surveillance and logistical support.
Teams showcased coordinated efforts to rescue individuals from drowning situations and provide immediate assistance to affected populations.
Officials said the exercise aimed at enhancing preparedness and response efficiency in the event of severe flooding, a recurring challenge in Assam and the Northeast.
The coordinated drills emphasised the importance of interoperability among agencies and the need for swift, well-synchronised action during emergencies.
Lieutenant General Neeraj Shukla, General Officer Commanding of Gajraj Corps, oversaw the operational readiness of the participating units.
Addressing the gathering, he underscored the importance of a “whole-of-society” approach to disaster management and urged all stakeholders to adopt the guiding principles of “Predict, Prepare, Protect and Provide”.
Shukla further stressed that community participation, or “Janbhagidari”, is essential for effective disaster management and resilience-building. The exercise also aimed to instil public confidence in the preparedness of security forces and disaster response agencies.
The event was attended by senior Army officials, representatives from state administration, Central Armed Police Forces, and disaster management organisations. Around 800 people, including National Cadet Corps and National Service Scheme cadets, as well as students from schools and colleges across Guwahati, witnessed the demonstration.
Officials said participating agencies have committed to conducting regular joint training, updating standard operating procedures, and investing in capacity-building measures to strengthen emergency response systems.
The exercise reinforced the overarching goal of ensuring public safety through coordinated and timely disaster response.
