Operation Safe Speed: 6,777 vehicles fined in UP, ₹1.38 crore collected in two days

Lucknow, Oct 29 (IANS) In a major crackdown on over-speeding, the Uttar Pradesh Police Traffic Directorate has fined 6,777 vehicles and collected ₹1.38 crore under ‘Operation Safe Speed’ conducted on the state’s expressways and highways.

The special drive was carried out in two phases on October 26 and October 28. Director General of Police Rajeev Krishna and Additional Director General of Police (Traffic) A Satish Ganesh initiated the campaign aimed at curbing high-speed driving, a leading cause of fatal road accidents.

Interceptor vehicles were deployed on major expressways and identified locations to monitor and penalise vehicles exceeding prescribed speed limits. The Yamuna Expressway recorded the highest number of violations, with 3,116 vehicles fined for a total of ₹66.98 lakh.

On the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway, 1,289 vehicles were penalised, yielding ₹24.18 lakh. The Lucknow-Agra Expressway saw 537 violations amounting to ₹11.825 lakh, while the Ganga Expressway recorded 553 cases and ₹9.40 lakh in fines.

Other stretches also recorded significant enforcement; Delhi-Meerut Expressway (497 violations, ₹9.94 lakh), Purvanchal Expressway (348 violations, ₹6.96 lakh), Eastern Peripheral Expressway (214 violations, ₹4.28 lakh), Bundelkhand Expressway (103 violations, ₹2.28 lakh), Gorakhpur-Purvanchal Link Expressway (90 violations, ₹1.88 lakh) and Kanpur-Varanasi Highway (30 violations, ₹60,000).

Police officials said the campaign goes beyond mere collection of fines. Its primary objective is to foster a culture of safe driving and strict adherence to speed limits.

High-speed collisions are far more likely to result in severe injuries or fatalities, making speed control a critical aspect of road safety.

Through continuous monitoring with interceptor vehicles, the Yogi government and the state police aim to send a clear message that over-speeding will not be tolerated. Drivers have been urged to prioritise not only their own safety but also that of other road users.

The Traffic Directorate has emphasised that observing speed limits is both a legal duty and a moral responsibility. Similar enforcement drives are expected to continue on expressways and highways across the state to reduce accident-related deaths and promote safer travel.
