Kolkata, Aug 27 (IANS) Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Thursday announced a series of measures to reorganise and strengthen the state police force.
Speaking at a function organised at Lalbazar, the Kolkata Police headquarters, Adhikari said that in any disaster, workforce and quick-response vehicles are equally important.
He announced that one ‘112’ vehicle will be given to each police station before Durga Puja, with the event to provide the cars scheduled at Brigade Parade Grounds on Mahalaya (October 10).
Adhikari, who is also the Police Minister, announced the ‘Life Saver’ award to honour police officers who risk their lives. He said all police stations will be modernised, women’s help desks further improved, and surveillance in the cyber department increased.
He noted that cybercrime complaints are rising, with many victims losing their savings. To address this, he announced the formation of a new brigade of 200 civil defence personnel named ‘Arjun’, which will debut before Durga Puja and include firefighters.
Recalling the previous government’s failure during Cyclone Amphan, Adhikari said that Odisha Police had to send a Disaster Management Group of 300 personnel to clear trees in 12 hours, while local authorities struggled for three days.
He said the situation must change and that the Bengal Police workforce will be increased. Four ‘112’ vehicles will be provided to each police station, with Rs 100 crore allocated in this year’s budget. A total of 552 vehicles will be inaugurated at Brigade Parade Grounds during Mahalaya.
Adhikari also announced financial assistance for lower‑level police personnel. In October, ration worth Rs 2,000, advance salary and 20 per cent Dearness Allowance will be given during Durga Puja.
He reiterated the government’s ‘zero tolerance’ policy against anti‑state activities and violence against women, stressing that police should act without waiting for orders.
He warned against corruption, saying incidents of police constables being arrested for taking bribes must end.
“This culture of extortion needs to stop,” he said.
