Gujarat: Local youth-made rakhis to be sold at three ‘Statue of Unity’ area locations

Ekta Nagar, Aug 22 (IANS) Rakhis made by local youth undergoing skill development training will be sold at several locations in the Statue of Unity area from Saturday, giving trainees a platform to showcase their skills while creating an avenue for employment and self-employment.

Trainees of the Ekta Skill Development Centre have prepared Rakhis in different designs as part of a special workshop organised ahead of Raksha Bandhan on August 28.

The workshop aimed to encourage creativity and help trainees apply the skills they acquired through their training. The stalls will be set up at three locations in the Statue of Unity area.

The first, at the Statue of Unity (SoU) Bus Bay Area, will operate from August 22 to 28. A second stall will be set up at the Shrestha Bharat Bhavan Parking Area from August 25 to 28, while a third will operate at the Administrative Complex in Ekta Nagar from August 25 to 26.

The initiative is part of efforts to link skill development with livelihood opportunities for local youth in Ekta Nagar.

With the Statue of Unity and other tourism attractions drawing visitors from across India and abroad, authorities have also encouraged activities that involve local communities in the area’s development.

The Ekta Skill Development Centre organises various short-term skill development programmes for local youth, with support and guidance from the Statue of Unity Area Development and Tourism Governance Authority (SoUADTGA).

The centre aims to equip trainees with skills in different sectors and help them access employment and self-employment opportunities.

The centre also organises workshops linked to festivals and other occasions to encourage trainees’ creativity and overall development.

The Raksha Bandhan workshop allowed participants to use their skills to make Rakhis in a range of designs.

The stalls will allow visitors to purchase the Rakhis made by the trainees while allowing the young participants to display and sell products made as part of their training.

The initiative aims to support skill development and self-reliance by giving local trainees a direct platform to put their skills into practice.

The Statue of Unity is a major tourism destination in Ekta Nagar, which has developed into a prominent visitor hub around the world’s tallest statue and other attractions.

The authorities’ skill development initiatives aim to ensure local youth can also benefit from the economic opportunities tied to the area’s growing tourism activity.
