Valsad, Aug 8 (IANS) The Gujarat Police have arrested a man accused of practising as a doctor without a medical degree and treating patients with allopathic medicines at a rented house in the Valsad district, recovering 31 brands of medicines worth over Rs 53,000, officials said on Saturday.
The accused has been identified as Jaykaran Prajapat, who is currently residing near Valveri Phatak in Kaprada taluka and is originally from Bhatpurva Samuhi in Ghatampur taluka of Kanpur Nagar in Uttar Pradesh.
The action followed directions to identify people practising medicine without the required qualifications and take legal action against them.
“The directions were issued by Surat Division Inspector General of Police Prem Veer Singh, Valsad Superintendent of Police Dr Yuvrajsinh Jadeja and Assistant Superintendent of Police, Dharampur Division, Dr Sandeep T.,” officials said.
According to Kaprada police, Inspector D.N. Vanza was supervising patrols in the area when Assistant Head Constable Ashishbhai Arjunbhai received specific information that Jaykaran was allegedly practising as a doctor near Valveri Phatak.
A police team, accompanied by the medical officer of the Primary Health Centre at Rohiyal Jungle and a pharmacist, then raided a rented house belonging to Naranbhai Devrambhai near Valveri Phatak.
Police said Jaykaran was found treating patients and administering allopathic and other medicines despite not possessing a medical degree.
The police alleged that the practice could put human life and physical safety at risk. During the raid, officers recovered 31 different brands of allopathic medicines valued at Rs 53,751.20.
Jaykaran was taken to Kaprada police station, where an FIR was registered under Section 125 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, and Section 30 of the Medical Practitioners Act.
The arrest comes amid a series of similar cases involving alleged unqualified medical practitioners across Gujarat.
In July, a bogus doctor was apprehended in Dahod after authorities found him practising medicine without the required qualifications or licence.
In June, Anand police arrested 58-year-old Nitin Dahya Parmar, who was accused of running a medical practice from his residence in Borsad and treating patients for more than two decades without being able to produce valid Gujarat Medical Council registration.
A police team accompanied by a government medical officer raided his premises.
Earlier in March, Vadodara’s Special Operations Group arrested Dhaval Kawad for practising allopathy without a valid medical degree from a clinic in Gajrawadi.
Police said they seized antibiotics, cough syrup, glucose bottles, a stethoscope and a nebuliser from the premises.
The cases come against the backdrop of official data indicating the scale of the problem in Gujarat.
In March, the state government told the Assembly that 2,724 complaints of bogus doctors received between 2021 and 2023 had been investigated. Of these, 169 people were found to have fake degrees and 154 FIRs were registered.
