Ahmedabad, Aug 4 (IANS) Two men accused of advertising home cleaning services on Instagram and stealing jewellery from customers’ homes while carrying out cleaning work have been arrested by Ahmedabad City Police, leading to the detection of a previously undetected theft case registered by Bopal Police Station in Ahmedabad Rural.
According to the police, the accused allegedly used social media to promote a cleaning company before visiting customers’ homes under the guise of providing cleaning services. Investigators said they then stole valuables during the visits.
The arrests were made during a patrol by a Vadaj Police team acting on specific Intelligence.
The operation was conducted under the directions of the Ahmedabad Police Commissioner and senior officers of Sector-1, Zone-1 and B Division.
Police Sub-Inspector H.V. Gohil and his team apprehended the suspects and linked them to an undetected case registered at Bopal Police Station under Sections 306 and 54 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023.
The accused have been identified as Arjun Devaji Kir, 23, currently residing in Memnagar area of Ahmedabad, and Nanu Shankar Kir, 22, residing in Vastrapur area. “Both are originally from Kir Basti in Rajasthan’s Salumber district and were employed in cleaning work,” police said.
Police recovered stolen gold ornaments valued at approximately Rs 18.90 lakh. The recovered property includes a gold chain, two gold bracelets, a mangalsutra, a necklace, four gold rings and a gold nose ring.
The jewellery weighs more than 154 grams in total, according to the police inventory.
The case is the latest in a series of offences in which suspects allegedly used deceptive identities to target victims in Ahmedabad.
In a separate case reported recently, Vadaj Police arrested another group accused of posing as home cleaners through social media advertisements, detecting theft cases registered at Sola and Vivekanandnagar police stations and recovering valuables worth about Rs 2.88 lakh.
Police have also investigated other cases involving suspects using false identities, including individuals accused of impersonating police officers to rob residents in the city.
