Bhopal, July 31 (IANS) The Congress on Friday demanded that the Madhya Pradesh government declare a public holiday on August 9 to mark World Tribal Day, stop the privatisation of government institutions in tribal areas and ensure strict action against those accused in the murder of a Tribal Congress leader in Rewa.
A delegation of Congress MLAs led by Leader of Opposition (LoP), Umang Singhar, met Chief Minister Mohan Yadav and submitted a memorandum highlighting the party’s demands concerning tribal welfare and rights.
The memorandum sought declaration of a state holiday on World Tribal Day, an immediate halt to the privatisation of government Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs), tribal hostels and health centres in tribal-dominated regions, and stringent action against those responsible for the murder of the Rewa district president of the Tribal Congress.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Singhar said the delegation had raised issues concerning the dignity, rights and future of the tribal community.
“We have urged the Chief Minister to declare a public holiday on World Tribal Day, stop the privatisation of tribal hostels and other government institutions, improve the condition of dilapidated tribal hostels and ensure strict punishment for those involved in the murder of the Tribal Congress district president in Rewa,” he said.
Singhar said Chief Minister Yadav had given a positive assurance on the demands placed before him.
“The Chief Minister has responded positively to the issues raised by us. The Congress will continue to fight for the constitutional rights, dignity and interests of the tribal community, and there will be no compromise on their rights and honour,” he said.
The delegation included MLAs Phundelal Marko, Kedar Dabar, Jhuma Solanki, Sanjay Uikey and Sunil Uikey. The Congress has been raising issues concerning tribal welfare ahead of World Tribal Day, observed every year on August 9, and has sought greater government support for tribal communities and institutions in the state.
