Man killed in Jodhpur bus crash; angry mob sets vehicle ablaze

Jodhpur, April 4 (IANS) A road accident in Jodhpur’s Keru area on Saturday claimed the life of a 35-year-old motorcyclist, triggering unrest as an angry mob set the bus involved in the collision on fire. Police later brought the situation under control after deploying additional forces.

The incident occurred at Lordi bus stand, where a speeding public transport bus travelling from Jodhpur to Jaisalmer rammed into a motorcycle.

The deceased has been identified as Rajuram (35), son of Punaram Bhil and a resident of Lordi Dejgra village. According to police, the impact of the collision was severe, leaving the victim with no chance to escape, and he died on the spot.

Police officials said the accident took place around 4 p.m. Eyewitnesses alleged that the bus was being driven at high speed and the driver lost control near the bus stand, leading to the collision.

Following the accident, tension escalated rapidly as villagers gathered at the spot and raised slogans against the bus driver. In a fit of anger, the mob set the bus ablaze, reducing it to ashes. Fire brigade teams were called to douse the flames.

Police and administrative officials rushed to the scene and managed to pacify the crowd. Additional police forces were deployed to restore order, and the situation was eventually brought under control.

Police have taken custody of the body and sent it for post-mortem examination. A case has been registered against the bus driver, who is currently absconding along with the conductor. Search operations are under way to apprehend them.

Villagers alleged that buses on this route are frequently driven at high speed and with negligence, leading to repeated accidents. They claimed that despite earlier incidents, no concrete action has been taken by authorities.

The incident has once again raised concerns over road safety and enforcement against reckless driving in the region.
