Gujarat: Head constable dies by suicide in Gandhinagar, two more deaths in Bharuch

Gandhinagar, Jan 23 (IANS) A series of deaths reported within 24 hours across Gujarat has put the police department under scrutiny, after two serving police personnel and a police recruitment candidate died in separate incidents in Gandhinagar and Bharuch. Multiple investigations have been initiated.

In the latest incident, a police head constable posted at Sector-7 Police Station in Gandhinagar was found dead at his residence on Friday morning in an apparent case of suicide.

The deceased was identified as Upendrasinh Vaghela, a resident of Pethapur, who was on sick leave at the time.

According to police, Vaghela was found hanging from a ceiling fan on the upper floor of his house, following which family members alerted the authorities.

Senior police officials rushed to the spot, and the body was sent to Gandhinagar Civil Hospital for post-mortem examination.

Sector-7 Police Inspector Bharat Gohil said no suicide note was recovered. “At present, no definite reason behind the incident has come to light. An accidental death case has been registered at Pethapur police station and further investigation is underway,” he told IANS.

Vaghela is survived by his mother, wife and two children.

The Gandhinagar incident followed two deaths reported from Bharuch a day earlier. In one case, a woman police constable posted at Bharuch Police Headquarters was found dead in her residential quarters late on Wednesday night.

The deceased, identified as Preeti Parmar, allegedly died by suicide. Parmar, a native of Borla village in Talaja taluka of Bhavnagar district, had been serving with the Local Intelligence Branch in Bharuch for the past five years.

Police said the cause of her death is yet to be ascertained, and a post-mortem examination has been ordered.

In a separate incident during the ongoing police recruitment process in Bharuch, a 25-year-old candidate collapsed after completing a running test and later died during treatment. The deceased was identified as Ravirajsinh Jadeja, who was participating in the PSI recruitment process.

Police said Jadeja complained of breathlessness after completing the third round of the run and collapsed. He was provided immediate medical assistance and shifted to Bharuch Civil Hospital before being referred to a private hospital, where he was declared dead during treatment.

Police confirmed that Jadeja belonged to a police family, with his father serving as an Assistant Sub-Inspector in SRP Group-1 in Vadodara. In both Bharuch cases, accidental death cases have been registered, and investigations are underway to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the incidents.
