BJP-supported candidates won in first phase of panchayat polls, claims party’s Himachal chief

Shimla, May 27 (IANS) Himachal Pradesh BJP President, Rajeev Bindal, on Wednesday claimed that BJP-supported candidates secured a massive victory in the first phase of the Panchayati Raj elections where voting was held for 1,293 panchayats.

He alleged that reports were indicating that the BJP-supported candidates for pradhan and up-pradhan posts emerged victorious in nearly 75 per cent of the panchayats.

Bindal claimed this indicated that the people of Himachal Pradesh “are deeply disappointed and angry with the anti-people policies, false promises, and failed governance of the Congress government”.

Bindal said before coming to power, the Congress government had made tall promises to women, youth, farmers, employees and the common people.

“However, during the last two-and-a-half years the people of the state have received nothing but betrayal, inflation, unemployment, and economic hardship,” he alleged.

“The promise of financial assistance to women remains unfulfilled, announcements regarding jobs for youth remained confined to speeches and documents, and farmers and orchardists received only hollow assurances instead of real relief,” he said in a statement.

The BJP chief said the youth of the state are struggling with unemployment, while farmers and orchardists are fighting for fair prices for their produce.

At the same time, the common people are burdened by rising prices of electricity, water, and other essential services.

He alleged that the government has completely stalled development works and is functioning only to provide political protection and benefits to its favoured individuals.

Bindal further said strong public anger against the Congress government was visible in villages across Himachal Pradesh during the elections.

Several senior Congress leaders and political heavyweights have suffered humiliating defeats in their own areas, he claimed and added that the people of the state have completely rejected the arrogance and failures of the Congress government.

He said under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi the Central government has continuously provided unprecedented support to the state in sectors such as roads, healthcare, education, railways, rural development, and infrastructure, the benefits of which are reaching the people of the state.
